Opening a bank account in Georgia as a non-resident
Georgian banks open accounts for foreign individuals and companies, but compliance checks have become stricter. We prepare the file, arrange the bank meeting and follow the application through to approval.
Who can open an account
Non-resident individuals, Georgian companies owned by foreigners, and foreign companies can all hold accounts with Georgian banks. The largest banks include TBC Bank, Bank of Georgia, Liberty Bank and BasisBank. Multi-currency accounts (GEL, USD, EUR and others) are standard, and internet and mobile banking work from abroad.
What banks ask for
Individuals
- A valid passport, shown in original
- A completed KYC questionnaire
- Proof of residential address
- Evidence of source of funds: recent bank statements, an employment contract or tax returns
- A short statement of what the account will be used for
Companies
- Registry extract and charter; for a foreign company, apostilled and translated into Georgian
- Documents identifying every ultimate beneficial owner
- Shareholder decision to open the account and the director's passport
- A description of the business, its main counterparties and expected turnover
Do you need to come to Georgia?
National Bank of Georgia rules require the original identity document to be presented, so in practice the account holder or company director visits a branch once. Some banks accept a notarised power of attorney, but practice differs from bank to bank.
What has changed in 2025–2026
Banks now review the source of funds and the purpose of the account before opening it, and decisions can take up to about two weeks. Applicants linked to sanctioned countries are refused. Georgian banks follow the US, EU and UK sanctions regimes.
How long it takes
Publicly reported timelines are roughly 5–15 business days for an individual, 5–10 for a Georgian LLC and 10–30 or more for a foreign company. The bank and the completeness of the file make the biggest difference.

Frequently asked questions
Can I open a Georgian bank account remotely?
Usually not entirely. The original passport has to be presented, so most applicants visit a branch once. We prepare everything in advance so the visit takes a single day.
Why do Georgian banks reject applications?
Most often because the source of funds or the purpose of the account is unclear, documents are incomplete, or the applicant is linked to a sanctioned country. A well-prepared file avoids most refusals.
Can a foreign company open an account in Georgia?
Yes. Expect a fuller review: registry documents, beneficial owners, apostille and translation, and a clear description of the business and its payment flows.
Which currencies can I hold?
Multi-currency accounts in GEL, USD, EUR and other major currencies are standard at the large Georgian banks.
